PM Modi to launch Phase II of Ayushman Bharat scheme, free treatment for seniors over 70
Bhubaneswar, Oct 28: PM Narendra Modi is set to virtually launch the highly anticipated Phase II of the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) on Tuesday. Under this health insurance scheme, citizens aged 70 and above will be entitled to free treatment up to Rs 5 lakh at any hospital registered under the programme, according to Odisha Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling.
During a media briefing on Monday, Mahaling highlighted that the Ayushman Bharat scheme has not yet been implemented in Odisha, necessitating the development of a detailed implementation strategy. He expressed optimism that the scheme could be rolled out in the state by the end of this financial year, around March or April 2025.
The second phase, which will be introduced nationwide on Tuesday, aims to benefit senior citizens. The Minister noted that the state Health Department is making all necessary preparations, with plans to cover approximately 3.5 crore people under the scheme. He added that both Phase I and II will be launched in Odisha soon, ideally by the end of the current financial year.
