Odisha to combat cultural distortion in Jatra shows with new regulations
Bhubaneswar,Nov 4: The Odisha government is preparing to implement new guidelines aimed at enforcing a blanket ban on obscene dance performances during Jatra shows across the state. Culture Minister Suryabanshi Suraj announced this initiative, emphasizing the government’s commitment to preserving Odia culture from distortion caused by the obscenity displayed by certain jatra troupes.
Minister Suraj highlighted that Jatra performances are typically enjoyed by families, and a concerning trend has emerged that undermines Odisha’s cultural values and traditions. To address this issue, he stressed the necessity of strictly enforcing established guidelines for cultural events. The Law Minister has already expressed his support for this initiative.
The Culture Department will collaborate closely with the Law Department to implement measures aimed at curbing vulgarity in Jatra performances and similar cultural programs. Minister Suraj noted that while troupe owners and organizers must be held accountable, the audience also plays a significant role in perpetuating this trend. Therefore, a collective effort is required from all stakeholders to eliminate obscenity from these performances.
